Final Thoughts

Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to learn and experience various strategies and technology tools that I can incorporate in my classroom. Not only did I experience various technology sources and tools, but I also learned new applications for technology in the classroom and more specifically, in my content area.

The first valuable aspect of this class is the recognition I gained regarding the need to continually develop my skills in technology and staying current on the latest technology resources available. Students today rely heavily on technology and as educators we must adapt to our changing students. This means that I must seek innovative ways of incorporating technology in the classroom. I realized the importance for teachers to be fluent in technology and the tools available because technology is such an integral aspect of our students’ lives.

My second big takeaway from EDM 510 is that technology is not meant to replace teacher instruction, but rather it is meant to enhance lessons and help build a more engaging and interactive classroom. Technology has many applications in the classroom from assessment tools, instructional videos, and even educational games. Technology can also bring the outside world into the classroom and provide students with opportunities to experience instruction on a larger scale by using virtual labs and virtual field trips.

The third aspect of EDM 510 that I feel was most valuable was learning how to build technology into a lesson. I realized that incorporating technology into the classroom doesn’t mean more work for the teacher. The great thing about technology is that it can simplify processes and activities in the classroom. Technology can be used to engage students, encourage practice, communicate to students outside of the classroom, and work as assessment tools. I had the impression going into this class that technology can be a distraction or create more work to maintain for the teacher, but this class taught me that technology does quite the opposite. I was able to experience novel resources and practice using these tools prior to entering the classroom. I also enjoyed being able to see how my peers used the same resources and how they chose to incorporate them in their content areas. I think this aspect of collaborating and sharing ideas gave us all the opportunity to experience more resources than we would individually.

When I reflect on the past few months and the assignments that we completed, it is hard to pick just one because I really enjoyed a majority of the assignments we completed. I feel that I was able to experience so many great resources by being guided through the instruction of the EDM 510 class. I find that my favorite assignment was the assessment tools assignment. In this assignment we researched and chose a tool that we could incorporate in our classroom that would allow us to assess our students before, during, or after a lesson. I used Quizlet and FlipQuiz. I liked this assignment because we were able to develop creative and engaging ways to assess our students. There are so many options and resources available and even more applications in the classroom for the tools. I enjoyed the challenge and task of creating assessments for students that are delivered in a way that students don’t feel like they are being evaluated in the traditional format.

I also really enjoyed creating a Nearpod lesson. This was a separate assignment, but can also function as an assessment tool too. Nearpod’s versatility and opportunities to engage students makes this one tool I will definitely incorporate in my classroom in the future. Nearpod allows you to create a lesson that can have slides, quizzes, free response, drawings, and more. This tool is also accessible to students outside of the classroom for independent study. Nearpod will also allow me to assess my students and track student progress with the ability to print reports for the class or individual. Using Nearpod regularly will save me time and engage my students by having them involved. In the past I may have defaulted to using a traditional Powerpoint, but Nearpod requires the students to be involved and stay engaged throughout the lesson.

Prior to taking this class, I was skeptical on the ease and accessibility of being able to do labs and hands on activities in the classroom. These are two crucial aspects in a science content area that are necessary supplements to providing a meaningful lesson. I was worried that time constraints and supplies would limit my ability to provide my students with the opportunity to participate in the types if activities. Using technology to perform virtual labs or a virtual tour of the cell for example, makes incorporating these activities into my lessons more feasible. It will not require additional resources that an actual lab would require.

Overall I feel that I have greatly benefited from the instruction and activities in EDM 510. I feel that I became more fluent with technology and ways I can use it in my classroom in the future. I plan to continue to explore various ways of incorporating technology into my lessons and staying up to date on new tools that will promote student engagement and create more meaningful lessons.

For this standard I chose to use the course  of study standards and lesson plans I found in Week 3 for two classes in my content area and one for Technology Education. I believe these lesson plans demonstrate my ability to navigate through the ALEX site and also choose meaningful and engaging lessons that correlate with the standards for my content area. I believe these lesson plans are meaningful and directly correlate with the stated objectives on the ALEX site. I also included a screenshot of my workspace in ALEX.

The artifact I chose for this was one of my best blog posts. I chose this blog entry because I felt that I wrote about my experience creating a Prezi in a way that was honest and relatable to all individuals that have never used Prezi before. I discussed the process of creating the Prezi and the difficulties I encountered. This blog post not only describes the basic processes of creating a Prezi, but it also included a personal reflection on my experience using this program. I have provided a link to this blog post below.

3. 290-3-3-.49 (3)(d)1.(i)(VII) Electronic databases, including those available in the Alabama Virtual Library.

I chose my EBSCO screenshot of the five resources I discovered when looking through the database for resources I found interesting and applicable to my content area. The screen shot of the EBSCO folder demonstrates my ability to navigate from AVL to the EBSCO host site and search within the site to find meaningful resources. I think this is especially important because it illustrates my ability to access resources within various sites and find relevant tools to use from a larger resource. I also included the second part of the assignment for week 3 where we were asked to find two professional resources we could use in the future. The links I chose and the ability to create a permalink demonstrates my fluency with the AVL site and that I am able to identify useful resources that will be beneficial in my future classrooms.

4. 290-3-3-.44 (3)(c)1.(iii) Knowledge of media communication
 technologies that enrich learning opportunities.

I chose to include the screencast I created in week 12. I really like this artifact because I believe it provides students with a clear understanding of the assignment and expectations. I like that I was able to walk students through the process for the assignment and show them how to navigate through the site for the graphic organizer they would complete with the assignment. I also like that this media is a tool that can facilitate a lesson in the classroom for substitutes if I am out of the office. This video demonstrates my ability to provide clear instructions through media and guide students with the use of technology.

technologies that support and enhance instruction, including
classroom and school resources as well as distance learning and
online learning opportunities.

The final artifacts I chose were from Weeks 13 and 14 where we used tools that would help us assess students and deploy lessons. I chose to use FlipQuiz and Nearpod. I was unfamiliar with FlipQuiz and had a limited experience with Nearpod. The final products that I developed were a great example of my ability to adapt and create engaging tools to supplement lessons that students are able to interact with. With each of these tools, I explored all of the features that were available to me and included them in the final products. My ability to create a game and and interactive Nearpod lesson that is relevant to the curriculum demonstrates my skill with incorporating technology in a meaningful way. Nearpod can also be used at home by students, this tool serves multiple functions in and outside of the classroom that I believe my future students will enjoy and benefit from. The link for these are below.

Nearpod

This week I created a lesson using Nearpod. This tool is really neat and fun to use! I love that you can create presentations or lessons within the site or upload previously created powerpoint or slides. I created a new one and explored all the different features you could incorporate with the lesson. I really love that it features a student-paced or Live lesson where students are following along with you. I think this tool is also great tool to use for assessing a student’s knowledge throughout the lesson. I really liked the brainstorm feature that allows students to brainstorm as a class and see eachother’s contributions in real time. While there are some great features, I was disappointed that there is a storage limit when using the free version. The features you can access are also limited in the free version. I signed up for the trial of the Gold membership which gave me access to the other features. However, I would consider paying for this membership in the future as the features are definitely worth it. Some schools do offer site licenses, which allows teachers to have the membership at no additional cost to the teacher- this would be ideal! Nearpod also offers prepared lessons that are available for free or to purchase, this is another benefit of this tool. Overall, I was really impressed with Nearpod and can see myself using it frequently in the future.

Cells Alive- Screencast

This week I chose to do a screencast of the activity that accompanies one of my lesson plans. This is a great tool to use on days the teacher is out and a substitute is filling in for your lesson. Using a screencast of the activity gives students detailed instructions on how to access the site and navigate through it. It helps the substitute with clear instructions for the activity. It is something you can do to present to the class or simply for instructional purposes to give the substitute a better idea of the assignment. I used QuickTime Player to record the screen as  navigated from my desktop through the site. I accessed CellsAlive.com for my activity. I have designed a chart that will accompany the activity that the students will be using while going through the interactive cell tour. After creating a screencast, I added the recording to iMovie and added in audio to describe the process I was using. I believe recording the audio separately was the best option to allow me to narrate according to what step I was in throughout the process. This was really fun to make and I will definitely use this process in the future. I love how it provides students with a walk-through tutorial of the on-screen process they will be going through. You can access my screencast below:

Graphics Galore

I chose to focus my assignment on my current workplace and making graphics and visual products that I feel would be useful in the clinic setting. For each product I used a combination of photo editor, Word, Adobe, Excel and Preview to crop and reformat images and designs. A lot of the process involved overlaying imaging and formatting. As usual, the most challenging aspects I found was formatting.

  1. Organizational structure flowchart
    • Visual Type: Chart
    • Visual Category:Organizational
    • I chose to do this type of visual because I feel that in my profession new employees struggle understanding the chain of command and who to go to for what issues or concerns. I chose to keep this visual very simple and avoid any distractions. I felt that this representation was concise and to the point and thus made it more effective. I used Word to create this visual.
    • Clinic Organizational Structure
  2. Heartworm Poster
    • Visual type: Poster
    • Visual category: Interpretive
    • I chose to do this type of visual because explaining transmission of heartworms and prevention for pets is a daily routine in my profession. I felt like making a poster would be applicable to not only our employees, but also the clients we serve. I wanted to take a complex process and simplify it so anyone could understand the process. I also chose fun clipart to use to make the images more engaging for our every day clients. I used photo editor, word, preview, and free online clipart sources to create diagram within the poster. I like that this not only covers the lifecycle, but it also includes incidence and relevance to our clients and ways they can protect their pet.
    • Heartworm Poster
  3. Canine Behavior Graph
    • Visual Type: Graph
    • Visual Category: Relational
    • I have always been interested in studying animal behavior, primarily canine behavior. I am particularly interested in canine fear and aggression rehabilitation. One of the most important factors in understanding fear and aggression is understanding what signs and behaviors indicate a fearful response. I came across a peer-reviewed journal article that studied subtle behaviors as indicators of fear. I decided to take the data provided in by the authors in a chart format and form a graph from it. I find the the graph does a better job of conveying the information nd makes it more significant to the reader. I used Excel and Word to create this visual. The most challenging aspect of this visual was processing the data from a PDF to an excel sheet and then exporting the data into the most appropriate chart.
    • The graph  indicates subtle behaviors that were categorized as fear, no fear, and freeze. This aim was to see if subtle behaviors can be indicators of fear in dogs. Information like this is a good resource to share with employees working hands-on with animals to help them become more proficient in reading dogs and the warning signs of fearful animals that can lead to potentially aggressive behavior.

Lights, Camera, Action!

This past week, I made a video using iMovie. I chose this program because I was familiar with it from previous assignments that I had to make, granted it was a few years ago. It took me a little bit of time to refresh my memory with the program and its capabilities, but overall enjoyed this project. I made a quick how-to video on “Scrubbing in: Sterile technique.” This technique is used on a daily basis in my work place. I was able to coax a co-worker into being the star of my video, she graciously agreed. I think the biggest challenge that I faced was the editing. I am a bit of a perfectionist and wanted to make sure the audio and transitions were timed just right and made sense for the video and what the viewer would be seeing. Overall iMovie is a very user friendly program and has a lot of capabilties within it. This would definitely be something I would consider doing in the classroom in the future to explain processes or directions to an assignment. I even think it would be something students could use and navigate through to create their own videos to demonstrate a specific topic. See below for a link to my video!

The Power of Prezi

To start, let’s just say I minimized the power of Prezi. I had the impression that it was just a “dynamic powerpoint”- which it is, but it’s also so much more.

To start, I had to set up and account with Prezi, I went to the website (which I will list below) and created a login. I selected my plan, Prezi offers different packages that are available with different features- the higher the price, the better the features. Fortunately for us, are offered an upgrade from the free version to a basic package for no charge as an educational license if you use your school email address. I was concerned that the basic package wasn’t going to offer enough features, but I was pleasantly surprised of what I was able to do.

After signing up, it gives you the option of a tutorial, which I did. It was very basic, but gave me the groundwork before I went and explored on my own. Adjusting to the layout and setup of this web-based tool was challenging, but I eventually became fluid with designing the presentation. My biggest challenges were designing the flow of my presentation and then assigning a designated pathway for the viewers to go through. Once I learned how to frame and group objects it made the process much easier.

I really like how this tool/program works and think it would be a great addition in the classroom. It presents information in a dimensional format and helps create associations for the viewer. I think it also promotes engagement and creativity. I would really like to encourage my future students to use Prezi versus the traditional PowerPoint because I think it would help me understand their thought process and let them display their creativity.

As I was completing my presentation, I realized that I can’t expect to just know how to use a novel tool or software. I realized that I become proficient with practice and through trial and error. I encourage everyone to try Prezi if they haven’t already!

I’ve attached the link to my Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 presentation below, as well as the homepage for Prezi for those interested in giving it a shot.

OpenOffice Download

This post is about my experience downloading a word processing program other than one I am accustomed to. I will post my PDF of my experience below that outlines my process and  the similarities and differences I noticed. One thing I didn’t get to include before saving the document, was figuring out how to save the document as a PDF. The file options are listed differently than other programs and I struggled figuring out how to get it to save as a PDF. Shortly after fumbling around, I saw a logo up at the top of the screen that said PDF and realized I had to export the document directly as a PDF versus saving it as a PDF, which is the option I normally choose when using Word. Overall, the programs are fairly similar and it’s nice to know that there are free options that function in the same manner as Microsoft Office or Pages.

Designing a Content Matrix

When I began thinking about my design for my content matrix for EDM 510, I started by searching for examples. A lot of the information that I was gathering was related to business to business sales pitches. I ended up designing my own content matrix, and then did additional research. The research I found on one site in particular by Kevin Cain was useful and outlined an approach to designing a matrix, I’ll list the link at the bottom of the post. I used this site to design an approach and strategy for completing a new content matrix on different learning theory perspectives. I ended up making two different content matrices to see which I preferred. I decided to go with a content matrix with four boxes and a central idea in the center. Each box represents a different theory and gave an overview. I felt that the presentation of my content was too dense so I re-evaluated my approach and started over. My ultimate goal was to design a content matrix that made sense and facilitated the transfer of information clearly. I overhauled my original plan and kept key ideas in mind: audience, what am I trying to convey, why does it matter, and the overall usefulness of my matrix. My goal was to summarize the various theories, major influencers, and give examples of each theories applications in a classroom setting. The new matrix was broken down into levels and sub levels which enhanced the natural flow of the matrix in whole. I had issues with formatting and overall aesthetics of the second content matrix, so I went back to my first one and made some adjustments to improve the flow and presentation of information.  I learned a great deal from designing my own matrix and overcame challenges of determining the best presentation of the information.
